A Midwestern native, Fred Kundrata was born in Detroit in 1960 to Fred and Marilyn Kundrata, incredibly loving parents who instilled in all five of their children the importance of family, helping others, personal integrity, a strong work ethic and the blessing and responsibility of serving our great country. Marilyn Kundrata worked as a waitress and Fred Senior worked in the foundry business in Michigan. They were a solid, middle-class, hard-working family. This wonderful family shaped Fred and his belief system, and he grew up knowing that serving his country would become his life’s central mission. Fred’s devotion to his family has been the other central theme of his life.
During high school, Fred excelled in sports, academics and student government at Traverse City High School in Traverse City, Michigan. Fred went on to attend Bowling Green State University where he was a varsity track letterman, an Air Force ROTC cadet and earned his Bachelor of Science in Procurement and Materials Management. After graduation, Fred was proud to be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force - pursuing his goal to serve his country.
The highlight of Fred's Air Force career came during the 1991 Gulf War, following Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. Fred flew the first night of the war over hostile territory - followed by several more combat reconnaissance missions over enemy territory. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Aerial Achievement Medal for his courageous flying and was recognized and honored by General Norman Schwarzkopf for actions taken during a mission to save an American pilot shot down behind enemy lines. Fred’s willingness to put his life on the line to serve America is evident in the breadth of his military career. He sees what needs to be done and he gets it done.
Fred’s successful military career led him to escalating leadership assignments as a staff officer at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio and then to the Pentagon in Washington D.C. At the Pentagon Fred held positions in organizations under the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition and the Chief Information Officer of the Air Force.
Fred volunteered to deploy in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in the war zone of Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he was the Director of Operations of a Joint Task Force. Fred provided vital leadership in the organization’s capture of a Person Indicted For War Crimes and who was subsequently transported to the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia at The Hague. Fred retired from the military in 2011 and was honored with the Meritorious Service Medal for his dedicated service to the United States of America.
Fred is an 18 year veteran member of the Air Line Pilots Association AFL-CIO, now flying international aircraft. He is also a licensed attorney and successful small business owner of residential apartment buildings throughout Cincinnati. Fred’s education also includes a Master of Science in Business Management from Troy State University and a Juris Doctorate from Northern Kentucky University’s Salmon P. Chase College of Law.
